I saw Kate Bush before I ever heard her voice. There was a gap of about 10 years in between the two events- whenever VH1’s countdown of the “100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll” aired and April of 2009. You hear Kate Bush’s name pop up all over the place, and still it took me this long to encounter that voice. When “Aerial” came out, I remember being amazed that she was still alive and producing music. Apparently, I thought she was like a female Syd Barrett and an old hag to boot. As it turns out, she’s still quite a stunner and not as old as I thought.
Fast forward to April of this year, when I heard that voice for the first time, via “Wuthering Heights” of course. I couldn’t make out a word except for the titular estate, but I was awed. It was something of a squeaky voice, with a little shriek in there, but it was beautiful, almost foreign. Every time I hear the song, I want to twirl around like a fool.
