obligatory Titanic post

So, the movie came out when I was in 8th grade, and I could not care less, and I decided that I would be “rebellious” and I refused to see the movie, even though some of my friends were seeing it 10 and 12 times. I was no fan of Leo’s. I found him to be kind of slight and girly- looking. I’m guessing that I was still firmly Team Joshua Jackson in terms of celebrity crushes at the time.

Well, my luck ran out, because some friend of mine took everyone to see the movie for her birthday. I don’t remember much about the actual experience, except to note that I didn’t fall in love with it or anything. I was actually pretty annoyed that Jack theoretically could have survived. I remember towards the end, when the ship was sinking, that I thought it was taking an awfully long time for the electricity to go off. Movies! I’m pretty sure that I told people my favorite part was when the ship cracked in half, just to be “difficult” and firmly anti-romance. Oh, thirteen!

Oh man, the old VH1 logo! TNN! Being 9 at the time, I was not allowed to watch MTV, so VH1 it was. I don’t remember the video for “Fields of Gold”, but do remember being creeped out by the Middle Eastern vibe of “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You.”

The most amazing person that you would never guess worked on the show was [The Hunger Games author] Suzanne Collins. She was the quietest, nicest person. Like having JK Rowling working on your show!

-Fun Fact of the Day: Suzanne Collins worked on Clarissa Explains it All! Article here. I used to watch Clarissa on Saturday evenings when I was at my grandmother’s house. She was no fan of Clarissa, and found her to be very “fresh.”

This is a notebook from one of my summer camp classes in 1999, WHICH I HAVE SAVED FOR OVER 10 YEARS. Because… why? Mom’s been urging me to clean out more of my stuff for a while now, and I’m finally getting around to it. This class, though. It wound up being about jazz music, and I ended up there because I didn’t like the original classes that I’d picked, so I switched into my friend’s classes, which also happened to be the same classes that my crush was in. Perfect opportunity to act on crush, right? If you’re anyone but me, sure! To this day, I regret how I handled this matter. I did learn about Cannonball Adderly, though, which was a good thing.

Aww, look at that mid-’90s “hip” font.

going through old LJ entries

I used the phrase “sad panda” a lot in 2009.

"EXPLO is ineffable… Not only did I discover more of myself at EXPLO, but I also met a group of people that have become my family and some of the closest people in my life. Even after 6 months, I am still in love with my family and will never forget the ineffable experience I had… thank you so much EXPLO."

I got to live with this when I was a senior in college. It was pretty fun, except for the time her mom went away for the weekend and I had to dog sit, and it made me want to tear my hair out.

watching this Ryan Adams livestream

He will never *not* give me The Feelings, even though he’s um “difficult.” You don’t forget your first (actual) concert, right? So that was mine. Orpheum Theater, Boston MA. Fall of 2002. I guess he was touring behind “Gold.” I think it was an acoustic show. Tegan & Sara opened, and I remember thinking they weren’t bad.

I was such an anxious little thing that I actually took the T down to the venue ahead of time, just so I could scout it out and make sure I wouldn’t get lost on the way there.

Still wish more people knew that “When The Stars Go Blue” is his, even though it’s not one of my favorites.

Used to listen to this and have dance parties with Mom in the living room when I was a kid.
